Shane (167),
It's been over 25 years and not a day goes by without reflection of the sacrifice you made for your family, fellow officers and the City of Great Falls. Although I had been working the streets a few more years than you I learned from you every time we worked together or shared some time off-duty. Your strength, ability to remain focused and determination to get the job done was unmatched. Thank you for your sacrifice and bravery. Your short time on this earth made a positive impact on all that knew you my friend. My life has been spared several times since that fateful day on 9/7/94. I owe it to lessons learned and to you for watching over me. I know you always have my back my brother.

I met Shane in 6th grade, he was a good student and a good kid. I will also never forget the call from a friend in Montana that Shane had been killed, such a sad day. He was a good person your life was taken to early may you rest in peace, you will never be forgotten.

RIP my friend & brother. You have paid the ultimate sacrifice and you will never be forgotten for your heroism, loyalty, dedication, and sense of duty. It's been 20 years and it seems like yesterday that we were working side by side, serving and protecting the citizens of Great Falls. You were taken from all of us much to early in your career and life. Know that while you were with us you made a difference and since you have been gone you have saved many lives, including mine...... Thank you.

Shane,

Its been 20yrs my old friend and I remeber September 7, 1994 like it was yesterday. Not a single work day passes where I don't see your face, for your memorial hangs on my office wall watching over me as I work. I have visited your memorial site in Washington DC on several occasions and as I look at your name on that wall I still can't believe you are gone. You were such a stong officer that was dedicated to serving the public and always doing the right thing. ALthough you were a young officer when you were taken we all looked up to you. I remember working side by side with you on many calls and although I was senior to you I still learned from you on every call. Your legacy will live on forever, not only in Great Falls but all over this great nation. Continue to Rest in Peace my Brother for we will continue to fight the battle on the ground and join you one day in Gods hands.

Chad was a upfront guy... well respected and I liked him! My heart goes out to his family. Such a tragic event will be difficult to overcome without the love and understanding of friends, family and our community! God Bless! Peace be with you in this heartbreaking time.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 19th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their devotion to you through their reflections.

Shane,
Wow, its been awhile, though it seems like yesterday.
I remember that day all too well; the events and people remain etched in my mind.
You are thought about highly, and remembered often.
You were a good friend, a great officer, and a terrific human being; you are missed.

Shane and I were together at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy, Basic 80. One of the things they called us was "the throw back class". It was a bunch of men who just wanted to be cops. No fluff or frills, just doing the job, the right way. There were a lot of special guys there. Some became Sheriff in their county, others Chief of their city. Shane had all of that potential, but wasn't allowed to show all he could become. I miss you buddy.

Officer Chadwick,

Thank you for your service to the great State of Montana. You were murdered one year after my son Deputy Josh Rutherford graduated from high school. I remember seeing the news on television. I was horrified, how could anyone kill a police officer in Montana. I will keep your family, friends and coworkers in my prayers. My son joined you on May 29,2003.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

On the 13th anniversary of Senior Officer Chadwick's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Senior Officer Chadwick is not forgotten.

Shane, although this is the first time I have been on this site of reflections in your honor, I think about you and the night you were taken from your family, friends, and brother's and sister's within the Police communities, quite often. Having riden with you as a partner at work, and having fished with you at Holter Lake, brings great memories to me. You were a great officer, and a great friend to anyone you met. I often tell your story to other officer's on the NYPD, so as to let them know that even the best officer's can fall prey to the evil in the streets around us. You will always be missed, and may God bless you family, and friends.

Shane, though I never had the honor of meeting you, I have heard nothing but fond memories from those who did. I grew up in the Great Falls area, and I still remember September 7 like it was yesterday. I remember the stories I heard from my uncle when he worked for Cascade County. He said you always were willing to "Go the extra mile, even though it meant getting home to a cold supper." That still resonates in my head. I now am an officer in Montana. It is because of men like you that I have the opportunity to feel proud of what I do.

I once heard an officer from Canada state, "Though I never new Shane, I wept like I had lost my own brother. I didn't realize it until later, but I had lost a brother. Shane died so that I could have one more day doing what I do. Shane wasn't an officer, he was a hero."

I think of September 7, often when I am called to "questionable" incidents. Shane because of you, I can get dressed for duty knowing I have a purpose. As each Brother and Sister you have in Law Enforcement knows, "Though the day dons with the light from the Heavens, it ends with the darkness of Hell."

Thank you for giving your life so the rest of us can truly understand the Pride and Purpose the uniform carries.

You are a HERO to all!

Thank you 167!

I THOUGHT ABOUT YOU TODAY, AS I DO EVERY DAY SINCE SEPTEMBER 7TH. I REMEMBER LAUGHING AND JOKING WITH YOU ABOUT 8 TRACK TAPES AND YOUR NEW HUNTING TRAILER THAT NIGHT. ALTHOUGH I HAVE MOVED SO FAR AWAY, I WILL ALWAYS KEEP YOU CLOSE. ALL WHO READ THIS MEMORIAL MUST KNOW, YOU WERE AN OUTSTANDING OFFICER, BUT MORE THAN THAT, YOU WERE A GENUINE HUMAN BEING AND TRUE FRIEND TO ALL WHO HAD THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY. PEOPLE WITH YOUR INTEGRITY AND HONESTY ARE FAR AND FEW BETWEEN, I MISS YOU.

Shane, I got to meet your mom and dad this last weekend they were at the Chief's retirement. Very neat people. It's impressive to see they still follow us around up her in Great Falls. We still think of you and toast to you while at the City Bar, so close to where it all happened.
