Harry John Tholen

May 6, 2022

Harry John Tholen passed away peacefully in the early hours of the morning on Friday, May 6, 2022, in Great Falls, Montana.

Harry was born on October 4, 1946, in Geleen, Netherlands, to Martin and Sibilla Tholen. He had one older brother, Ted Tholen. When he was a young boy, the family immigrated by ship to the United States. His parents sacrificed so much for greater opportunities for their family, and they made a new home for their boys in Montana.

Harry first attended school in Cut Bank, MT, and then later moved to Great Falls, MT. He attended Ursuline Academy and graduated from Great Falls Central High School in 1964. It was here where Harry met the love of his life, Janis Thompson. The two of them enjoyed spending time together, attending school dances and sporting events, and getting to know the many lifelong friends they acquired along the way. They were married June 17, 1967.  On October 11, 1969, Renee Lyn Tholen was born, shortly followed by Rebecca Christine Tholen on October 24, 1972.

In his early years, Harry worked in retail for both Montgomery Wards and the Shoe Corp of Montana. He also enjoyed his time playing softball. Many crazy times and classic stories ensued! The friends that he made remained dear to his heart forever.

In 1991, Harry made a career change to what eventually became the true career calling in his life. He became the Executive Director at The Ursuline Centre where he had been a student himself. He saw this work as not only a job but a ministry to others. He was very proud of the projects that he undertook and the people he positively influenced through the Centre. His time in the Ursuline building, around those who shared a common passion for it and for the Lord, were some of the best times of his life.

Harry was kind beyond measure and had a wonderful sense of humor.  He was a loving and supportive husband and father and brought out the very best in people.  He enjoyed working in his garage on numerous projects of all kinds, telling stories with friends, and spending time with his family-especially his grandchildren. They brought him such joy, and they adored him! They loved their “Papa” so very much and treasured every moment with him. They particularly enjoyed rides in his vehicles-namely his trucks, boats, and ATV “Little Blue,” anything chocolate, and the family’s yearly trip to Seeley Lake which was also his favorite place.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Sibilla Tholen, as well as his parents-in-law, Woody and Marion Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janis; brother, Ted; daughter, Renee King; son-in-law, Gordon King; daughter, Becky Hatler; son-in-law, Scott Hatler; and his four grandchildren, Kendal Hatler, Gabe Hatler, Tatum King, and Isley King. Harry loved people well and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

There will be a vigil service at The Ursuline Centre in Great Falls on Monday, May 16, 2022, at 6:00 p.m.  The funeral will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception and cemetery procession. For those wishing to do so, donations would be appreciated to The Ursuline Centre or Holy Spirit Parish.
